18 months of fun!

Today is my "birthday". It's been pretty great so far but mostly it's just been me hanging out with my ladies (which is always super fun - until it's not). I was enjoying a little birthday browsing at the bookstore where my girls were off having a - supervised - blast looking at books (read: terrorizing the children's section) when Josie took something away from Sammie. Sammie looked at Jo, punched (PUNCHED!) her in the gut and screamed "NONONONONO!" And it dawned on me...Sammie is officially 18 months today. Not much of a baby anymore.

Are you kidding me!?! This is about the time with all of our other kids when we've started the 'let's try for another one' conversation. We know for sure that we're done with that whole business so that conversation is not happening anywhere in this house anymore. It's bittersweet though. Until this point, I knew that there was going to be another baby in my life. Not so anymore. I'm not saying that I want another one (because heaven knows my sanity couldn't take that hit) but there was a little comfort in knowing that, yes, my baby could grow up because there would soon be another one to take his/her place as the baby.

Yet, here we are. Sammie is rapidly - oh so rapidly - entering the toddler phase. She's talking, throwing fits, playing with other kids, pestering her siblings, dancing, singing, and having opinions about everything! It's fun and wonderful and exciting and sad.

With all this though, she's still our baby. Our baby who just happens to be getting bigger and more fun everyday.

One of her favorite things to do right now is take all the canned goods out of the pantry and stack them on the floor. She also looooves "helping" me put them away.
She also loves "helping" Clayton unload the dishwasher (he isn't as in love with this as she is).
What is it with babies and dishwashers?
She loves to play dress up. Since she has no dress up stuff of her own she frequently takes Josie's dress ups and sports them around the house.  Perhaps she needs some stuff of her own...
She also loves to take the boys' hats. If she sees one, she'll run up to you calling "hut! hut!" (hat! hat!). Girlfriend loves a snappy chapeau.
I took a few pictures of her today after her nap. She's so funny when the camera comes out. She loves to say "Teeee" and ham it up.
Other words she says: "Guggy" (doggy), "Wuff" (woof), "Aww duh" (all done), "Mama", "Dada", "keekow" (tickle), "Uh-uh" (usually pretty emphatically while shaking her head), "muh" (more), "my" (mine), "eye", and "nuh" (nose). I know that there are a few more that I'm forgetting but you get the gist. She likes to talk and is learning new words everyday. Watching a baby develop language is, hands down, one of my most favorite things ever so this is a really fun stage for me. I love hearing all her new words and trying to decipher her language. Good times!
Physically, Sammie is pretty much all caught up! Hooray! She is still doing physical therapy once a week but that's mostly just to build up her strength on her left side. She is walking with no problem, she can kind of run (it's actually pretty funny to watch her run and it usually ends up with her falling over), and she loves to dance. Currently we're working on stairs. She's a champ at going up the stairs, but it's the getting back down that worries us. Hopefully she'll catch on to that soon and I can live a baby-gate free life! I'm also hopeful that PT will end here in the next month or so. We love Miss Cathy (the physical therapist) but it will be a happy day when we can have our Friday mornings back.
Sammie is such a comedian. She has this high pitched fake laugh that she does that Justin and I can't get enough of. She knows when she's being watched (which is often) and will go for the laugh every time.
This picture just kills me. This girl is so funny.
Things Sammie likes: FOOD (there is nothing picky about this eater - and I love that!), her siblings - especially Noah - those two have a sweet little relationship, dancing, being tickled by her daddy, being chased, the dog (all dogs really - bless Disco's little heart), bathtime, making and then destroying towers of things (blocks, cans, toys, etc.), driving toy cars on the carpet, hugging and kissing baby dolls, throwing balls, dress up, her taggie, going to bed (can I get a 'Hallelujah' here? she has never struggled with bedtime ever in her life. makes me love her more), and mommy and daddy.

Things she does NOT like: having things taken away from her, diaper changes, being taken out of the bath (she tries frantically to twist out of my grip every time), being told no, finding the pantry door shut, finding the baby gate closed, and being alone in a room.
Nicknames: Sammie, Sam, Sammich, Samshell, Soup, Soupie, Soup and Sammich, Hammie Sammie, and Peanut.
I am so lucky that this sweet, deliciously plump, squishy baby is mine. Even though she's entering a tantrum-throwing phase, she's still so sweet and loving. So while I'm sad that this baby is becoming a little girl I really love who she is. It's been so fun to watch her little personality develop - she definitely fits right in here at Casa de Smith! We love you Sammie and are so glad that you are our 'baby'!
(You may notice I made no mention of the fact that she can start nursery now. It's because I'm the nursery leader and she's been going with me for about 6 months now. So that particular milestone has kind of lost some of it's appeal. Sigh...)
