This is supposed to be a ruffle and not a pleat, but I couldn't figure out the whole "ruffle" thing. I think a pleat is just as cute!
My good friend Mindi let me and Josie come over this morning and use her sewing machine. We had a good time making these (Mindi is making one too) and I was so impressed with how easy it turned out to be. I did all my prep work (washing, ironing, pinning) the night before, so when it came time to actually sew, it only took a couple hours. Since I totally plan on making more of these, I think I will only get faster! I also made a few mistakes on this dress that I think I could easily fix with my next ones.
My biggest mistake: sewing my finger to the dress. There are certain things that I hear about and I always wonder, "What kind of idiot ..." Well, I am officially the idiot that sews her finger to stuff. I was concentrating so hard that I forgot to move my finger out of the way. Next thing I knew I was trying to move my hand but couldn't. Mindi and I were laughing so hard. There was actual thread going all the way through my finger (fortunately it looked way worse than it was - it doesn't really hurt much). My poor fingernail looks like hamburger right now. Idiot.
Anyway, it was a fun project that I will be doing again. I can't wait. This is the first sewing project I've done all on my own (well, mostly) and I can't wait until this little lady can fit in it (it's a little big right now): In the meantime, maybe Aunt Anisha could make her a headband to match. Then she could be handmade from head to toe! (Anisha made this cute headband and the one in the box on the right, she's crafty too!)
Bottom line - now I want a sewing machine.

I'm so crafty (but kind of an idiot at the same time).
I found THIS tutorial online the other day and thought, "That looks easy, I can do this." Now, keep in mind, I don't sew (I don't actually own a sewing machine). I want to, I think it's wonderful when other people do, but I get easily frustrated and usually end up yelling at my projects. However, I think I am singing a different tune now! This tutorial WAS easy and my sewing attempt was a success! It turned out like this:

Yikes about the finger. That sounds painful.
That dress turned out so cute! Crafting is fun and very addicting, especially when you have a little girl to craft for.
I am thinking about trying to make this dress soon

(I added a space between 2008/09/ and habitaul so the address would fit in your comments section so be sure to take the space out if you look up the address)
And for super cute fabrics you should google Amy Butler Fabrics, she designs some really cute stuff.
good job! if i had a girl... id totally make on. btw... I was heming some pants for Trace last night... and I put the needle thru my finger!! so, Im an idiot too!!!
Super cute dress, I am very impressed!!! Also, I am glad you like the headbands, and thanks for the advise, my next one will be perfect!!!
HA! I didn't know it was possible to sew your own finger with a sewing machine! That really cracks me up.
And . . . good job on the onesie dress! It's so cute, and I love the colors. Isn't it crazy to crave a sewing machine?! I actually use mine all the time, and the longer you use it the less frustrated you get (bobbin no longer makes me want to cry). Especially if you're watching something fantastic while you sew.
It's so cute Ariane! Good job!...to bad about your finger though! I LOVE my sewing machine...you'll get hoooked!
You're gonna hate me when I tell you I have a nice sewing machine still in its box. Got it for Christmas last year. Maybe I'd have more motivation if my babe was a girl. Hope you get your sewing machine sooner than later. Aside from the sewn finger, looks like you could have a future in dressmaking. Good job!
I'm glad to hear that you didn't hurt your finger in the process of sewing it to your project! Good job by the way, VERY cute! I love the fabric choices.
Great job! I am already in "crazy" mode and spent almost 2 hours at a ribbon store the other day! I'm so excited to make other things too!
I got a sewing machine while in dental school at "Tuesday Morning" for only $100 dollars and it works fantastically (do you have those stores out there?)
Keep posting all your cute stuff--I love the ideas!
